February is National Pie Month. It’s not surprising we dedicate an entire month to pie; after all, humans have loved this filled pastry since ancient Egyptian times when it was just a rustic oat or wheat crust filled with honey and cooked on coals.
That still sounds good to me.
And if pie sounds good to you, you don’t have to go far to find it. Our friend, Mike Sutter who reviews all manner of foodstuffs on his website FedManWalking.com returns to the show today.
He had the deliciously daunting assignment of traveling throughout Central Texas to sample pie.
Mike discovered that great pie is no longer the domain of quaint communities surrounding the Austin Metro area. In fact, there’s a kind of pie renaissance underway, and pie–really good pie–is easy to find in Austin.
Pie takes us back to simpler times, when our grandmothers thought nothing of baking a pie — and in the middle of the week, no less! Pie was a regular part of the day, whether served at the end of a meal, or with coffee and tea when friends stopped by. Everyone had pie.
Everyone can have pie again, whether we make it ourselves or surrender our taste buds to any of the fine pie makers who have embraced the art of pie in our fair city.
Pie connects the past with the present, and we’ll probably follow a trail of pie crumbs into the future.
Pie is here to stay, and life is sweeter for it.
