The name Anna Ginsberg may not be a familiar one unless you keep up with the Pillsbury Bake Off—the grandmother of all cooking competitions.

In 2006 Anna had a million dollar idea—literally. And with it became the 42nd winner in the annual Pillsbury Bake-off, walking away with a cool million dollar grand prize and a lifetime of bragging rights.

What did this soft-spoken home cook and cooking contest veteran create that captured the imagination and taste buds of the judges?

Baked Chicken and Spinach Stuffing. Her secret ingredient: waffle sticks with maple syrup.

After her big win, Anna decided to take a break from competitions to concentrate on her own projects. She created her popular blog Cookie Madness, where she began first posting cookie recipes only, and today includes other sweet treats in the mix as well.

Most of the recipes presented on her site are her interpretations of other people’s work. She does develop original recipes, but visitors to her site probably won’t see many of those: she’s saving them for contests and books.

Speaking of books, Anna’s written a delightful book The Daily Cookie: 365 Treats for the Sweetest Year of Your Life.

I met Anna some years years ago at a Food Blogger Christmas Cookie Swap in Austin, Texas. She attended with her young daughter Emma, who is a budding young actress. I found Anna to be friendly, genuine, and interested and complimentary of what others brought to share.  Emma was a character and a delight.

Anna chose to demonstrate a recipe created by her friend (and fellow cooking contest veteran) Janice Elder, which featured sage and basil from the garden.

It’s fun to experiment with savory  ingredients in confections, although Anna will be the first to say it doesn’t always work out. Yet, in the case of the Lemony Sage and Basil-Flecked cookies she prepared—they were winners.

Cookie Madness? Nope, Cookie Genius!
