Gratitude and mindfulness: Peace through P.I.E.

Pie With a Purpose

It’s a new year with new opportunity to be better and to do better. And what’s better than pie? Especially when it is pie with a purpose.

The purpose: peace.

That’s where Luanne Stovall comes in. She founded Peace through P.I.E. (Peace Includes Everyone), a movement and nonprofit with a “simple” premise: gather together people from diverse backgrounds and ideologies to share meaningful conversations about themselves, peace, social justice and more.

The thing that gets them around the table is a sweet or savory pie.

Peace Through Pie encourages people to engage in judgment-free dialogue about life, the universe and everything. Because in the end, Stovall says we’ll discover the depth of our similarities; something worth recognizing in our current social and political climate.

Stovall, an artist and educator, didn’t intend to start a movement when she baked her first peace pie more than 20 years ago.

Her inspiration came from a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King which aired during the MLK holiday.

Deeply moved by the struggle of “so many beautiful people working so hard to bring civil rights to everyone,” Stovall decided to make a pie to commemorate the holiday. “Because,” she told me, “that’s what I do on a holiday. And every holiday should have a food component.” On this pie, she wrote “I Have a Dream”. And this Dream Pie became the inspiration for what would become Peace Pies, and Peace through P.I.E.

Early adopters of Peace Through Pie were high school culinary programs; students made pies—sharing them with classmates and teachers—along with their personal stories. For the past 10 years, the heart of the movement has been at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksville. The church hosted the first—and continues to host, the primary—Peace through Pie social.

Luanne says support for Peace Through Pie is diverse and wide-ranging; individually and collaboratively citizens work to spread the message of peace and understanding.
