Plant Sales

Feb 26th, 2015 | By | Category: Grow Something, spring

On March 7, 2015, folks in the Austin, Texas, metro area are in for a treat.  Two long-running plant sales are taking place, which gives you a chance to scoop up some healthy organic vegetable and herb transplants for your spring garden. You’ll want to arrive early and take a place in line, because the crowds get long.

Sunshine Community Garden Plant Sale

The Spring Plant Sale and Garden Festival at Sunshine Community Garden is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

This sale is near and dear to my heart, as I had a garden there for several years in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and even served on their board.

This year’s festival is on Saturday, March 7, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. at the Garden’s location: 4814 Sunshine Drive, near the intersection of Lamar Blvd and 45th street.

Bring a wagon or some other way to carry your plants with you. Cash and Checks are accepted. They have a wide variety of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and tomatillos from which to choose.

Austin Organic Gardeners Annual Plant Sale

The Austin Organic Gardeners group is probably one of the oldest gardening groups in Austin.

They’re also having their plant sale on Saturday, March 7, 2015, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. inside the Austin Area Garden Center at the Zilker Botanical Garden, 2220 Barton Springs Road just east of the Mopac expressway.

Parking is tight, so carpool if you can. Bring something to carry your plants in, and bring cash and checks.

Usually everyone who arrives in a timely manner will leave with transplants they want from both of these sales. So, please be kind to the people around you and do not push or shove.

Be mindful of children who may be in the crowd so that you don’t trample them in your quest to find the perfect heirloom tomato.

  1. There’s also the Johnson’s Backyard Garden’s Spring Transplant Sale. Started last week and extends for more Saturdays

  2. Thanks, Hector — I am aware of Johnson’s Backyard Garden transplant sale. It’s a good one. I chose to focus on plant sales by non-profit organizations, however. Cecilia

  3. Hey Cecilia – I noticed a typo (above, in the 4th to last paragraph) – the sale is March 2, 2013 (not March 5 2011).

  4. Thanks, Jodi! Fixed it. I always appreciate another set of eyes on these things. 🙂
